JORDI:  The weed you brought to the office is called Japanese clover, Lespedeza striata, or Common Lespedeza.  It is a prostrate, freely-branched summer annual.  The leaves are very tiny and they form a dense mat.  Japanese clover produces small purple or pink flowers, which are actually quite striking up close but the plant is basically too small to have much ornamental value.  Flowering occurs during July – October and it reproduces by seed only.

This year I bought a big bag of assorted narcissus bulbs.  These will produce bunches of small yellow or white flowers in spring.  The front of the package shows what the flowers will look like and how many bulbs there are.

The back of the package gives planting instructions.  Remember these are for a bed.  You might want to plant naturalized bulbs a little farther apart and use more random spacing.  The usual depth for narcissus bulbs is 4-6 inches apart in holes 4-6 inches deep.

Narcissus bulbs are smaller than daffodils.  They have a pointy top, sometimes extending into a long neck.  Plant them with this part pointing up.

Here you can see a side view of several narcissus bulbs.  These are all different kinds and will bear different styles of flower in the spring.  They are covered with a papery tunic.  It’s okay if this falls off, but don’t peel it off deliberately — it helps to protect the bulbs.This bulb is a double one.  Narcissus often appear this way; it’s one method by which they reproduce.  When mature, double bulbs can be separated carefully and then replanted.  Each half will grow into a complete plant, identical to the parent.For naturalizing bulbs, you need a trowel and a pair of garden gloves.  The gloves are especially important with this type of gardening, as they protect your hands from sharp grass blades, splintery wood chips, and other hazards you might not find in a carefully groomed garden bed.Choose a place where the spring flowers will look nice.  You may scatter them through the yard or plant them around trees.  I decided to plant a ring around the base of this maple tree.Fill in the hole and smooth down the dirt.  If you have leaves or bark mulch, add that after filling the hole.  Water the bulbs if you’re not expecting rain.

Naivetea begins with high altitude-grown oolong processed into thick dark green twisted nuggets and infuses with tiny osmanthus blossoms, a tiny flower that somewhat similiar to jasmine in both appearance and fragrance. These are visible as tiny brown petals mixed in with the tea itself. The fragrance is light and sweet.

I brewed a generous teaspoonful in a cup of 180F water for a little over three minutes. The resulting liquor was a pale jade with a rich floral fragrance resulting from the mingling of oolong and flowers. The flavor was mouth filling, but just on the edge of bitter, with a touch of astringency, rather than the sweetness I expected, although it did leave a strong fragrance in my mouth.

I infused the second cup for four minutes, with identical results. Nowhere was there a hint of the natural sweetness I was looking for, or the promised sweetness of the osmanthus flowers. The tea left a very nice fragrance in my mouth once again, but the flavor was a let down.

Still hopeful, I infused the leaves one more time for four minutes, but the results were the same. It has staying power, I’ll give it that. I’ve liked other scented/flavored teas from this company, but this one left me wanting.

One advantage to living in an area with cold winter temperatures and there aren’t many but one is that you can grow peony flowers with ease ,because peony flowers  require cold winters to set their buds. Because of this many southern US gardeners are a little leery  of planting peonies; however, there are supposedly and I say supposedly as I live in Canada where we are always assured cold enough winters for the setting of the buds for the peony flowers . Peonies are naturally better adapted to a more northern climate but  both of these varieties it is claimed flourish and have been grown in some southern  gardens for many years and are relatively trouble-free , if planted properly in the right location, these beautiful peony flowers  can last for centuries.

Peonies are best  planted in the early fall, as this gives the peony plant a chance to set its root system necessary for it to produce peony flowers the following year. Place the peony tubers just beneath the   soils surface so that the peony eyes are no deeper than 2 inches below the surface. Peonies that are planted too deeply may fail to flower. Give peonies space to grow, as some peony plants can spread as much as 3 feet. Peonies are a long-lived perennial plant, and it is not unusual for peonies to live over 50 years.

Peonies are one of the  toughest most resilient , longest-lived perennial plants available to the North American gardener. They require only  minimal attention they  live virtually forever. The yearning of savouring the taste of an ice cold pomegranate as shown in these photo is hard to resist. Those who have tasted a pomegranate like such will join me in saying that ‘ek baar khaya hai, aur dobara khaane ki hawwis hai’ ( have eaten once and yearning again)It is said that best variety of pomegranate in Pakistan is called Kandahari anaar, and is imported from our Western neighbor. It is also grown in Pakistan – mostly in Balochistan. In 2007, Pakistan exported more than 4500 tonnes of Kandahari anaar from Pakistan. On the origin on pomegranate tree itself, it is said that Pomegranate came to Pakistan from Iran, where it was a native plant specie.
