December 6th, 2009Pond lilyOver the last forty years or so, we have become much more aware of our place within the global ecosystem. We’ve acknowledged some of the harm we’ve done to the environment, and hope that may that it may not be too late to repair the damage. I’m Jim Metzner, and this is the Pulse of the Planet. To make an ecological difference, we need to take a hard look at the long term effects of all of our environmental actions.

“I think it’s important to recognize that just about everybody’s an environmentalist. Everyone realizes that there’s something that humanity has to do to preserve the environment, including the natural environment that we inherited and which we’re proceeding to ruin.”E.O.Wilson is one of the foremost scientific thinkers of our day. He suggests that we consider a cautionary tale about a lily pond.
“The importance of long term thinking is illustrated by the French riddle of the twenty-ninth day. And it goes something like this . . . consider a pond, that is implanted with one lily pad, and each day, the lily pads in the pond double. The pond becomes completely full and there’s no more room for lily pads to multiply on the thirtieth day. When is the pond half full and half empty? On the twenty-ninth day. And the environmentalist looks at the human population and grants that there’s still empty parts of the world that can be converted to agriculture, and we can still squeeze in another billion or two, and maybe keep on going a little bit more. But the real environmentalist says “hey, looks like we’re on the twenty-ninth day. Let’s pull it short right now before we go all the way.” (1:20)

December 4th, 2009rhododendronAlmost unfortunately, I can’t stop humming the theme from Bob Hope and Bing Crosby’s “The Road To Morocco” now that I found out that the rhododendron is the official state flower of West Virginia. I know that seems a bit sequitur but I never claimed that my thoughts bounced around my brain in normal fashion.

Musical classics aside, the rhododendron is a cool choice for West Virginians. It’s a very woody flowering plant which means that florists cannot use it in their cut arrangements. However, it’s very close to the azalea (a rhododendron hybrid) which is another flowering plant that IS sold in West Virginia flower shops.
I have to say “kudos” to West Virginia legislators for choosing a flower that is beautiful, classic, and offbeat (not unlke myself). I say “offbeat” because rhododendron isn’t what we would expect to see in arrangements coming out of a flower shop. You’re much more likely to see them as blooming plants though they are not forced (not caused to bloom) like azaleas which are rhododendron hybrids. Since it’s a little different and somewhat unique, I give two thumbs up to West Virginians for that choice.
It must just be the mood of the day because I’m also thinking of unique and somewhat cheesy card messages that could be used on an enclosure card if you send a blooming azalea plant to someone. They may not have a clue that azaleas are rhododendron hybrids or what the West Virginia state flower is. They will after reading the card! I mean, come on. You’d smile if you got a card that said “You’re on the rhod-odendron to success”. You may groan or sigh as well but it’s the thought that counts. By the by, I have a brother that would laugh for an hour over something that inane. To each their own.
If you’re thinking about sending flowers and want something really cool, consider asking your local florist about a rhododendron inspired arrangement. The flowers are beautiful and colorful. The plant is sturdy and woody which means it’s able to withstand a lot of resistance. Know a person like that? Plus, sending a blooming plant is a little off the norm so someone with a sideways sense of humor (like me) would love it. Take a peek at the rhododendron and talk with your florist about the great gift ideas that follow.

December 3rd, 2009VioletThis is the violet hour, the hour of hush and wonder, when the affections glow again and valor is reborn, when the shadows deepen magically along the edge of the forest and we believe that, if we watch carefully, at any moment we may see the unicorn.I’m in a violet frame of mind. I must already be craving a brief visual respite from all the earthy tones of this season…and I was just thinking the other day, after looking at some of the new collections for Spring 2010, how sad it is that the ethereal, whimsical beauty of Christian Lacroix Couture is no more. Just knowing all that beauty was out there somewhere in the world could take me to a Happy Place. Sniff. A single tear just fell into my Ugg.

Do you remember the delightful colour of this gum from when you were a child? And how the idea of it was always much better than the taste, which was disturbingly similar to your Grandmother’s perfumed soap? Still, it was great for licking and then applying a light berry stain to 12 year old lips in the days when an entire summer allowance wouldn’t have bought one lipstick from “By Terry”.

December 1st, 2009gardeniaI only got one of the photos but I have an idea without them. First of all you want to make sure the gardenia is getting enough light and water. Keep the soil uniformly moist but not soggy and it needs full sun to part shade. If you have it in shade try a little more light. Both light and water can cause blooming issues. Abnormal bud drop (if the buds are actually falling off before they open) can be caused by high night time temperatures or low light levels. Keep in mind that some buds will drop no matter what conditions the gardenia is in. From the picture above light may be a factor so give it a little more light.

Another thing to consider is that the gardenia was blooming before you purchased it and the buds you are seeing are the shells of the spent blooms. These will sometimes continue to grow even after the bloom has been shed.
Now on to the lilies. If your lilies were blooming when you purchased them then the blooms cycle is probably the issue. From the time the bloom forms to the end of it life cycle is only about 4 to 6 weeks. Once the bloom is fully open it only lasts two or three weeks. So I would be more concerned with any unopened blooms. Are they opening properly? Once they open they should last for a few weeks. If not
I think the gardenia has a few blooms left to open but I think I see a few pod when the blooms has already done it’s thing. The plant looks very healthy — the blooms may have gone through a little transplant shock. Don’t move it the sun is a good thing but you need to make sure it is well watered. If you haven’t watered lately pour two gallons of water around it slowly. This should saturate the soil (it is plant in the ground and not a pot) then check it in a couple of days. Water if the soil is dry. You might want to create some humidity around it. Both of these things should help with any blooms that haven’t opened.
As for the lilies, they seem to be in good shape. I have the orange and the reddish variety in my garden. When the blooms open I can get about four or five day out of each individual bloom but the stalk will have blooms open every day so the blooming of the plant lasts for weeks. Plants look healthy and the bloom pods look good. Just keep the soil moist the same way you need to for the gardenia. I have notice that this spring my blooms aren’t lasting as long as they usually do. I live in the Northeast corner of Arkansas and we have had very hot dry winds lately which is my problem. If you have had similar winds that my be your problem.
Keep me posted. I will try to take a picture of my lilies to give you a reference.check your watering and light. Just like the gardenia, the lilies need light and even moisture. You want the ground to drain well but if you stick your finger in the soil up to your middle joint the soil should feel moist. The soil should not feel mussy or spongy. Also give it as much as eight hours of sun a day. Get sun all day long and do very well. My Aunt’s get at least 5 hours sun a day and they still do well.
Check on those conditions and remember the blooming cycle this year will be a little off normal schedule if they were forced in the greenhouse to bloom. This doesn’t compromise the plant but it can be confusing when you neighbors are not going through the same blooming cycle as yours. Please keep me posted.
